Introduction

There are many different views as to what makes a society fair or unfair.

Equality

A society is fair when income and wealth are equally distributed among all people.

Need

A society is fair when it takes care of those who are poor and in need regardless of what they give back to society.

Equity

A society is fair when hard-working people earn more than others.

Entitlement

A society is fair when people from families with high social status enjoy privileges in their lives.

  1. Notes: All items of the BSJO scale use the following 5-point response scale: 1 “Agree completely,” 2 “Agree,” 3 “Neither agree nor disagree,” 4 “Disagree,” and 5 “Disagree completely”. For the purpose of this report, the response scale is inverted so that higher values correspond to stronger agreement
